The route of last Saturday's three loop swim. Thanks Google! You see, the island really is out there! Now, to how it looked last Saturday morning. I'm trusting it's much better today for the Meech Lake Tri!

Get ready! Fiona ditching her goggles, me after adjusting mine.

Get set! At this point I'm looking tentative — as if I might swim back to shore, but really I'm just trying to acclimate to the water (which was lovely, I'm just always a wuss getting in!).

Go! And we're off — on our way to the island ...
Many thanks to Bruce for the pictures. I can sure see how spectating might have been a little more trying than usual! Click for better visibility! ;-)

Wow! Looks like a foghorn or lighthouse may have been useful. Very cool, though, to have an island to swim around when you can find it.
!
Wow, I am actually surprised the swim even continued in conditions like that! I mean, I think if someone started having problems, no one would see them!
Almost Hemingway-esque, but it would be:
"Islands in the Steam"
I guess you just had to trust that there was actually an island out there somewhere.
That was a swim for the memory banks.
That hd to have been weird. I've run in the fog but swim?
Thanks for the comments folks!
To Danielle's point, though, I wouldn't have swum if I thought I'd be in danger. The pictures really show the fog, but from my vantage point in the water (such as it was), I could see the first lifeguard's kayak, so I'm pretty sure they could see me. When I couldn't see the next kayak, the lifeguard I was talking to obviously could, because when I smartened up a bit I asked the guard to point to the next boat so I could swim in that general direction!
hey Wendy,
That's some fog. I always thought it would be cool to swim in fog..then again..w/ me not swimming straight.i probably get lost very very easilY :)
Gee, all of a sudden I feel fortunate to have had to work that Saturday. I remember driving to work thinking it was the worst fog I had ever seen in Ottawa, especially since it was uniformly thick for over 20kms.
